The City of Lakes

Known as the Venice of the East, Udaipur is one of the most romantic and picturesque cities in India. Surrounded by the Aravalli Hills, dotted with serene lakes, and adorned with grand palaces, Udaipur has long been a favorite destination for royals and travelers alike. Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, the city was built as the capital of the Mewar Kingdom after Chittorgarh fell to the Mughals. Its blend of Rajput charm and Mughal influences makes it one of the most culturally vibrant cities in Rajasthan. The city is famed for its royal residences, historic forts, intricate temples, colorful bazaars, and serene boat rides that reveal the beauty of Lake Pichola. Udaipur is a place where history, art, and romance coexist beautifully.

City Palace

The City Palace of Udaipur is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan and the crown jewel of the city. Built by Maharana Udai Singh II and expanded by his successors over 400 years, the palace sits majestically on the banks of Lake Pichola. The palace is a stunning fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, with ornate balconies, towers, courtyards, and gardens. Visitors can explore various sections like the Mor Chowk with its peacock mosaics, Zenana Mahal, Krishna Vilas, and the grand Durbar Hall. Today, part of the palace serves as a museum showcasing royal artifacts, costumes, weapons, and paintings, while another section still serves as the royal residence of the Mewar family. From the top, one can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Pichola and the surrounding Aravalli hills.

Lake Palace

Floating like a shimmering jewel on the serene waters of Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace is one of the most iconic landmarks of Udaipur. Built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, it was originally called Jag Niwas and served as a royal summer palace. Constructed entirely with white marble, the palace has courtyards, terraces, fountains, and gardens that reflect the opulence of Rajput royalty. Today, it functions as a luxury heritage hotel managed by Taj Hotels, offering guests a regal experience like no other. Even if you are not staying there, a boat ride on Lake Pichola gives you an enchanting view of this dream-like palace illuminated at night.

Jag Mandir

Often called the "Lake Garden Palace," Jag Mandir is another island palace located on Lake Pichola. Built in the 17th century by Maharana Karan Singh, it served as a refuge for Mughal Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) during a rebellion against his father. The palace is adorned with marble chhatris, elephants carved out of stone, lush gardens, and the grand Gul Mahal. Jag Mandir is believed to have inspired the design of the Taj Mahal. Today, visitors can take a boat ride to the palace and enjoy its serene gardens, evening lights, and royal ambiance.

Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace)

Perched high on a hilltop overlooking Fateh Sagar Lake, the Monsoon Palace, also known as Sajjangarh Palace, was built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh. Originally intended to serve as an astronomical observatory, it was later used as a summer retreat and a vantage point to watch the monsoon clouds. The palace offers panoramic views of Udaipur city, its lakes, and the surrounding countryside. During sunset, the palace turns into one of the most romantic spots in Udaipur. Its scenic backdrop has also been featured in several Bollywood and Hollywood films, including the James Bond movie "Octopussy."

Bagore Ki Haveli

Situated on the waterfront of Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat, Bagore Ki Haveli is a historic haveli built in the 18th century by Amar Chand Badwa, the Prime Minister of Mewar. The haveli has more than 100 rooms adorned with intricate frescoes, stained glass windows, courtyards, and balconies. Today, it houses a museum displaying royal costumes, traditional Rajasthani art, and cultural artifacts. In the evenings, Bagore Ki Haveli comes alive with its famous Dharohar Dance Show, where folk musicians and dancers showcase the vibrant culture of Rajasthan. It is one of the best ways to experience the spirit of Udaipur.

Jagdish Temple

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Jagdish Temple is one of the most important Hindu temples in Udaipur. Built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh, the temple is a fine example of Indo-Aryan architecture. The temple’s 79-feet tall shikhara is adorned with beautifully carved pillars, sculptures of deities, and intricate motifs. The main deity is a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in the form of Jagannath, while shrines of Shiva, Ganesh, and Goddess Shakti surround the temple. The temple remains a vibrant center of spirituality, attracting devotees and tourists alike.

Saheliyon Ki Bari

Saheliyon Ki Bari, meaning the Garden of Maidens, is a beautiful garden built by Maharana Sangram Singh II in the 18th century. Legend has it that the garden was designed for the 48 maidens who accompanied the Maharana’s queen as part of her dowry. The garden is famous for its lush lawns, lotus pools, marble pavilions, and ornate fountains fed by the waters of Fateh Sagar Lake. It remains one of the most peaceful retreats in Udaipur, offering a glimpse into the leisurely lifestyle of the royal ladies.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake is a stunning artificial lake built by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678 and later reconstructed by Maharana Fateh Singh. Surrounded by the Aravalli Hills, the lake is dotted with three islands, one of which houses the famous Nehru Park – a popular picnic spot with a boat-shaped café. Visitors can enjoy serene boat rides across the lake and witness beautiful sunsets against the backdrop of the hills. Fateh Sagar Lake is also home to Udaipur’s Solar Observatory, one of the best in Asia.
